If one were to take a five-minute walk or ten-minute walk in any state across Nigeria, the certainty of sighting plastic waste on every street corner is highly probable, which ideally shouldn’t be.

Because plastics are not biodegradable, they spend more time in our dumpsites, gutters, and drainage. At times, the locals resort to burning the, which releases CO2 emissions, as well as other greenhouse gases, posing significant risks to human health and environment.

Plastic pollution has become a major concern for Nigeria, requiring comprehensive waste management strategies and increased public awareness to address the issue at its roots and work towards a more sustainable, plastic-free future for communities across the country and most importantly, repurposing the waste for urban reuse and development.

Traditional approaches to city building have often prioritised short-term goals over long term environmental and community well-being. This shortsightedness has led to a range of challenges, from clogged streets and polluted air to crumbling buildings.

A greener and more resilient Nigeria is, however, achievable, by redefining the present and the future of construction, through the development and production of high-quality, long-lasting paving stones that address the problem of plastic pollution in Nigeria and by extension in Africa, offering an alternative to traditional brick pavers.

Interestingly, plastic roads made its first appearance in India two decades ago, according to “Good News Network” an American online newspaper which publishes positive news stories.

The same source reported that plastic roads are being tested and built in more and more countries as the world’s plastic pollution problem becomes more acutely felt. It should be noted that India has installed over 60,000 miles of these roads.

This technology is gaining ground in Britain, Europe, and Asia. Several countries including South Africa, Vietnam, Mexico, the Philippines, and the United States, among others, have built their first plastic road recently. Looking at these, Nigeria can also follow suit.

The path to a sustainable urban development lies in innovative solutions that tackle pressing environmental concerns.

In view of this, City Pavers has its sight on transforming the construction industry via the manufacturing of paving stones from recycled plastic waste.
